Exercise 03: Typographic Character Combinations using Form + Counterform
The goal of this exercise was to stack letterforms in different hues and shades into a diagram. And then to use that diagram to learn how to identify type classifications and then design compositions with letterforms from each category.
For this composition, I used Didot for the “S” because I am attracted to
the thick and thin strokes that modern typefaces use. I went with a monochromatic color scheme. On top of the “S” in a brighter hue, I used Fette Frankur for my “G”. I like how angled the negative spaces (counters) are. On the very top, in the deepest shade of green, I layered a “Z” in Baskerville. It's italic and the typeface is traditional. I think Baskerville is easy to look at because of it’s clean serif
For this composition I used the primary colors in pastels because I wanted it to
look fun. On top, scaled the largest, I put a “J” in Fette Frankur because I thought the serif swirls were playful and even though it’s really bold, the thin hair lines help break it up which I like. Next, I put a pink “S” in Georgia, a transitional font. And finally I used a yellow “B” in Baskerville. I was going to
make it italic however I really enjoyed the vertical stem and how the shoulders
are matching so I left it.
